When I came home from work on thursday I made a sandwich, grabbed a shandy out of the fridge, and plopped onto my bed to scroll through memes on instagram. What I immediately found was this: Well, not actually that. What I found was a video of two young black men smashing self checkout counters with hammers. But you know, same vibe. I want to discuss the ongoing events in Minneapolis, the public reaction to them, and how they fit into a broader historical and political context. But before I do that, I want to establish the facts surrounding the case that ignited the whole situation. George Floyd was murdered. Hi, young person worried about climate change. Sorry for the click-baitey title. I want to talk to you and it's hard to get people to listen to you on the internet. I think we might be able to help each other. Like you, I'm profoundly worried about the changing climate. Like you I've read the opinions of the scientific community and seen the charts and heard the predictions. Like you, I've seen how the world for the most part has completely and utterly failed to deal with that information in a rational way and adjust their path accordingly. We are, based on our current course, utterly, completely screwed. The world we're heading for is a corporate feudalist hellscape of scarce resources, violent conflict over habitable land, a collapsed biosphere and quite probably the near-term extinction of the human race.
